Unfortunately, S. Bent went out of business. (Why does it seem like all the really good companies aren't around any more?) A big part of S. Bent's business was college chairs. Their answering machine tells you that the chairs are available though Standard Chair of Gardner

Occasional and accent pieces in solid mahogany and select premium veneers. Drawers are made of solid oak and all drawer slides are wood on wood. Salem Square is one of several companies that have earned a fine reputation as a great source for 18th century occasional furniture. All drawer pulls are solid brass and you have your choice of eight finishes, including several "old world " rubbed, aged and crackled finishes. This gives you the option of choosing a piece and finishing it exactly like you want it - something different, yet still in the spirit of your home’s decor.

A lot of dining furniture these days is either too big or too small, too expensive or too cheap, too plush or too uncomfortable. Saloom has found a wonderful niche in the industry by finding just the right combination of price, size, quality and comfort. They make chairs, tables and case pieces that are neither formal nor informal, but just right. Stylish, comfortable and functional, Saloom is loved for the way they beautifully mix solid hardwoods, premium fabrics and innovative materials such as granite. Founded in 1982 by Peter Saloom and his radial arm saw. From very humble beginnings, Saloom has evolved into a multi-million dollar company with over 100 employees.

Scott Thomas furniture is produced in the old-world tradition of furniture making. Artisans spend countless hours carving detail, inlaying exotic wood marquetry, and applying their secret finishing process, all by hand. Just like master furniture makers of the 18th and 19th century, minor variations in wood tone and detail are what characterize the beauty of a handmade product.

Looking through their catalog makes me imagine I'm living right there on the coast. I feel the wind on my face as I step out on the deck to watch the seagulls drift back and forth with the early breezes coming off the ocean. The waves break rhythmically on the sand scattering sandpipers digging for crabs. I take a deep breath and .... what am I doing? We're talking furniture here. Colorful, painted furniture perfect for the coast. Shutter design doors and beds, open cabinets, everything is functional and inviting. Where was I? Oh yeah... I take a deep breath of salt air that clears my thoughts and puts things in perspective. The sun is warm and...

Sealy doesn't actually make furniture, they license Klaussner to do it for them. The only place to see the furniture is in a store that sells Sealy Furniture. Sealy Furniture™ is a supporter of NASCAR, which makes sense, if you're hurtling down a track at 200 MPH in 110 degree heat inside a tiny missle, when you get home you need to relax on something comfortable.

The name Sealy has always been synonymous with bedding. Competitors often complain their customers come in the store asking for a Sealy, like we go into a store and ask for Kleenex or Band-Aids. That's fine for Sealy and fine for you because you are purchasing one of the finest bedding sets on the market. The biggest problem mattress companies have these days is sticker-shock. Someone uses a mattress that was handed down from the grandparents, got placed in an attic, was given away during a garage sale and then finally disintegrates when a window is left open and gets it wet. They then head to a store, see the prices and faint. Not realistic folks. You have to remember that there is nothing else in our lives that carries our full body weight for six to eight hours, 365 days a year for ten years straight. Your family car couldn't hold up to that kind of use. The fact that a Sealy mattress carries a ten year warranty is a modern miracle. Consider the technology that goes into a mattress and you will be amazed that they cost as little as they do. For the ultimate in luxurious comfort, check out the factory web site.

Innovative and affordable has been Sitcom's philosophy since their beginning in 1991. Begun as a collaboration between Alexander Chan and Shelly Wong their designs have won numerous awards including the 1991 ID Design Award for Furniture. You'll find their furniture has a distinctive contemporary flair but is still practical for everyday use. Once you see their catalog or view their on-line web site you may recognize many of the designs. That's because Sitcom is a major supplier for a number of mail-order companies such as Crate and Barrel, Frontgate and Hammacher-Schlemmer. We would classify their furniture as being an excellent value but you should see it if possible before buying so you know the quality you are getting.

The company was a mainstay of the city's celebrated furniture industry around the turn of the century, when Grand Rapids was widely recognized as the Furniture Capital of the World. After falling on hard times during the Depression, Sligh found new life under the leadership of Charles R. Sligh Jr., who moved operations to nearby Holland, Mich., in 1933.
1980 marked Sligh's 100th year of continuous operation, a milestone that earned the company recognition as a centennial business from the Historical Society of Michigan. The company began its fourth generation of Sligh family management in 1990, when Robert L. Sligh Jr. became president. He is the great grandson of founder Charles R. Sligh. Formerly known as Southern Furniture Reproductions, the company changed their name in October of 2001. Authentic Shaker and Colonial style furniture made of Eastern White pine. Over 300 years ago the King of England chose these tall strong trees as his wood of choice to make the masts for the English nobilities' ships. Surveyors marked the very best trees with an arrow that bore the King's mark and forbid the Colonists to cut them down. However, the strength of the trees was well known and carpenters loved to work with the wood. Despite the threat of penalties, the white pine was used throughout the colonies for wainscotting, paneling, flooring and furniture. Fortunately, there are no "king's arrows" marking the forests today, so SFR used it as their wood of choice to make make casual, comfortable furniture that is easy to care for and fits so well into any home setting. In today's eclectic homes this furniture can be used in a formal 18th century setting or used to accent your own casual relaxed decor.

Southwood was started in 1973 by three successful executives from the furniture industry. They wanted to form a "family company" and specialize in what they knew best, "18th century upholstery designs." I know what you are thinking, "them and about 250 other companies." But Southwood had an advantage, the people running it truly loved the classic beauty of 18th century, and they know how to make it well. Since then, they have gained a reputation as being a high-end high-quality line. The attention to detail they have carefully maintained allows them to break their line down into Queen Anne, Chippendale and Federal period designs. It was this determination to keep their quality and value in balance that allowed them to be an authorized manufacturer of SPNEA (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities) and Historic Deerfield pieces. Association with these organizations is allowed only after a company has shown that it can maintain their standards. Southwood carries a five year warranty and specializes in Reproduction, skirted, motion leather and contract upholstery.

I'm not personally familiar with this line so I'd like to use the letter I got from the factory asking me to include them in furniture magazine. I don't normally do this because, well... of course they're going to say they are the best. But, in this case I'll make an exception because I am familiar with Statton, and would have to agree they make the finest (or at least rival anyone else making that claim) domestic solid cherry reproductions in the US. So I trust what they are saying about Sovereign. If any of my readers own Sovereign and would like to add a footnote, please send it to me.

"The Statton Family has been producing solid wood antique reproductions for over 80 years. We still produce the finest domestic solid cherry reproductions in the US, which can be found at Camp David and many of the US Embassies worldwide. Six years ago we started Sovereign Furniture LTD. to look into importing mahogany furniture. We located an exceptional company in Europe that started a factory in the Far East to produce the finest reproductions. They have spent years training their workers to produce at the highest quality level and have accomplished a major milestone by being awarded the ISO 9001-2000 manufacturing certification. They are one of the few companies in the Far East to achieve this level of success. Thus we are able to offer you an exceptional value. All of the furniture we transport to the United States is climate controlled and built to expand and contract according to the season. In a nation of imported goods, ours stands above the rest because we know and understand construction and finish technique. We value the smaller details and pay great attention to making each piece authentic to its original design. We use the best cuts of mahogany (Swietenia mahogany) and the finest finishes to enhance and capture the depth and flare of the grain of wood. We hope to build a tradition in your home for generations to come. Please view our collections and contact us with any questions you may have. "

For some 75 years, Spring Air has been widely recognized for its innovative mattresses and sleep sets. Francis Karr, who founded the company in 1926, was himself a visionary. His free-end offset coil design, which adjusts to each sleeper's weight, is today the most copied design in the bedding industry. Spring Air has earned a reputation over the years for continuous product improvement. In the late 1940's, the company introduced button-free technology, quilted surfaces and extra-supportive bedding materials. In 1953, Spring Air began producing its Health Center mattress, which featured zones for different areas of the body. The company began manufacturing the Back Supporter mattress in the early 1960's, and sales doubled within seven years. Among other enhancements to Spring Air mattresses were the pillow-top mattress (1973), natural fiber bedding materials such as silk and wool (the Four Seasons concept in 1988) and Conforma foam which conforms to your neck, shoulders, and lower back (1991). Innovation continues into the 90's with the introduction of latex/innerspring combination products. In 1995, Spring Air introduced a product line that uses three zones in the foundation for durability, zoning in the innerspring for support, and seven zones in the Conforma foam for total sleep fitness. In 1999, Spring Air introduced the ultra premium Back Supporter Comfort Caress Collection... Better Comfort, Better Quality, Better Value. In 2000 Spring Air introduced "The latest sensation in sleep innovation". The foam encased perimeter design that provides more support, more comfort, and more edge-to-edge sleeping surface. In February 2001 Spring Air introduced the NeverTurn mattress feature with only one sleeping side and it never needs to be turned. The ComfortFlex feature conforms and supports to the shape of your body providing less mattress disturbance from partner movement and a better nights sleep. Today, Spring Air distributes bedding internationally, with plants in the US, Canada, Mexico, England, Ireland, Australia, Middle East and Argentina. The company is the fourth-largest bedding manufacturer in the world and still leads the industry in product features and value.

Ahhh.. what could be better than gently rocking away the afternoon while enjoying a warm summer breeze? Squires Hardwoods can bring that blissful dream a step closer with their fine selection of rockers. And the last thing you'll have to worry about is the quality because these rockers are made in the USA of 100% solid oak and hardwood - no veneers, no laminates, no finger jointed parts. Mr. Squires learned his trade from his father who started his own sawmill and timber business back in 1912. His dad got started by his dad who takes the family tradition all the way back to when granddad opened his first lumber yard in 1851. When treated with care, a Squires Homeland Rocker should last a lifetime. Choose from a variety of styles and colors as well as a natural finish and the distinctive "Squires Honey Oak Finish. Being handcrafted, no two chairs are exactly the same, however all the chairs are of the same high quality.

Contract upholstery for the office, although it could be used in the home. Did you ever wonder where your doctor’s office gets its waiting room chairs? Its from companies like St. Timothy. Built to take all the abuse you could ever hand out, this furniture is limited in styling because it has a "keep it simple" look about it. The factory will probably disagree with that because they do have several very nice pieces that could just as easily fit in your living room. So if your company needs some heavy duty upholstery in fabric, leather or vinyl contact St. Timothy.

Stack 'em up, rack 'em up. Since 1922, Stakmor has been helping us stack solid wood chairs one on top of each other. There is no more excuse for those ugly metal folding chairs. Actually there hasn't been an excuse since 1922, but then there hasn't been anyone like us around before to tell you different.

In 1946, brothers Bob and Mac Hodgson started manufacturing chests in a small building in Bay Minette, Alabama. In a very short time, they created a reputation for delivering quality-built products that made good business sense. Thirteen years later, in 1959, Bob and Mac rallied the community and rebuilt the company after a three alarm fire consumed the building. During the year it took to rebuild, Standard kept its commitment to customers and employees with typical dedication that exists even today. Standard entered the import business in 1986, importing and assembling dining room groups and casual dinettes. This program has now become a tremendously successful Grand Designs division. Standard today supplies most of the leading retail chains in the nation, over 1,500 independent stores, and stores in many countries around the world.

In an industry where there are literally hundreds of companies making the exact same product you do, it is very hard to survive, much less stand out. Stanford is doing both by offering a small collection of very popular designs, in a current, fresh fabrics at a price that is hard to resist. They will make a medium to upper-medium quality product, well priced and backed by the factory against any defects. Any maple exposed wood is available in three finishes, mahogany is available in mahogany and gunstock finish only. The look is transitional and traditional.

In 1924, a young man named Thomas Bahnson Stanley realized a long-held dream when he founded Stanley Furniture Company. From the beginning, the Stanley goal was to manufacture high quality furniture at a price the average American family could afford. To accomplish that goal, Mr. Stanley surrounded himself with the finest furniture craftsmen and instilled in them a sense of pride in building superb quality into every Stanley product.
Those original craftsmen passed on their knowledge and their unique sense of pride to each generation of Stanley craftsmen. And today, that pride is shared by their 3,000 associates who have enabled Stanley Furniture Company to become one of the largest, most respected case goods manufacturers in the nation.
Stanley makes such a wide variety of styles and meet so many needs that they cannot all fit in this small space. Please click on Stanley to go to their own separate page which includes bedroom, dining room, occasional, wall units, office furniture and home entertainment centers in styles ranging from contemporary to shaker. When you go to a store that carries Stanley you can often get everything you need from case goods to upholstery. I consider Stanley a Furniture Magazine "Best Buy" because of their variety of styles and competitive prices in their class ( mid price, mid quality).

Started in 1919, Statesville Chair began making hand-crafted Chippendale, Queen Anne and Georgian custom reproduction chairs. Statesville Chair Company no longer exists. The company was a division of Classic Leather, who also owns St. Timothy Chair. Statesville Chair as a company was dissolved more than 5 years ago. I have worked for the St. Timothy Division for 33 years and all of the frames that were kept in play were put in either the Classic Leather division or the St. Timothy division.

Statton Secretary There are only a few companies in the furniture industry who's name has become synonymous with quality and design, without compromise, for generations. Statton is one of those. For almost 85 years, this family owned company has preserved the original 18th and 19th designs of such masters as Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton.
Their solid cherry reproductions and original designs have remained faithful to the spirit of the most prolific time in furniture innovation and change. Choose from bedroom, dining room, occasional and wall systems, home office and entertainment centers.
Statton Furniture Company is one of the few companies still owned and operated by the original founding family. Nestled in the foot hills of the Appalachian Mountains, the company is about seventy miles west of Washington D.C. Established in 1926 as a small producer of bedroom furniture, it has been quietly producing distinctive furniture of uncompromising quality for three generations. The line has grown to two hundred patterns and exemplifies the best of 18th century design and craftsmanship available in residential and commercial furnishings.
Philo Statton, with assistance from his wife Helen, founded Statton Furniture by the time he was thirty. He and Helen had developed a strong belief in the enduring beauty and craftsmanship inherent in traditional furniture and it was not long before occasional and dining room pieces were added to the bedroom line. In the thirty's a new mahogany collection appeared. New and innovative marketing techniques were developed such as the Statton "Tru-Type" House, which showcased furniture in attractive room settings for the first time, complete with accessories, wallpaper, and drapery treatments.
Today, the third generation is committed to the principles of quality and value espoused by Philo Statton in 1926. The effort and care of many people who make up the Statton family of craftsmen are evident in every piece of Statton Furniture.
UPDATE: Since 2009 Statton furniture is being sold under license to the Master's Woodshop, Inc. You can purchase either from The Master's Woodshop or purchase direct from the manufacturer. Keywords: Solid wood, solid cherry

"Collector Quality Furniture Since 1900" is their motto. Today, on its ninety-sixth anniversary, Stickley's fame has spread throughout this country and well beyond. Rarely a week passes without a major tribute to Stickley from a national publication for the pivotal and leading role it plays in reissuing the historic Mission Collection and making Arts & Crafts furniture available and affordable to "all who wish it and find it congenial to their mode of living."
Early in 1900, Gustav and Leopold Stickley along with other proponents of the Arts & Crafts Movement, advocated a return to simpler ideas, honest craftsmanship and sturdy ornamentation as a rebellion against the ornate Victorian furniture of the time. Today their Craftsman or Mission furniture is among the most prized and sought after at auction houses and antique galleries.
"After the excesses of the Eighties, we witnessed a return to fundamental ideas, to simple, well made and unadorned furniture. Our Mission Collection which began with thirty-three reissued Gustav and L. & J.G. pieces was immediately hailed as a 'Revival of the Fittest.'
While steeped in history and tradition, the collection has grown to over three hundred pieces designed for today's living. Made of solid quartersawn white oak and solid wild black cherry, each is signed and dated by a skilled and proud craftsman.
Over the years we have survived, prospered, and received many worthy tributes. In 1994 Gustav Stickley was inducted in the Furniture Hall of Fame and in May 1995, Stickley was chosen as the Business of the Year by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. Much of the success we have enjoyed is due to the outstanding people we have surrounded ourselves with. They have an understanding of Stickley's past, a commitment to its present, and a vision for the future."

The word "hand-made" is used very broadly in this post-industrial world. At Stone County, hand-forging iron is a process for which the most important ingredient is passion. Hammer and tongs, fire and forge, searing white-hot iron... their way is the traditional way, in which each blacksmith takes pride in the fact that their craftsmanship is on the line and only the best work will do. It is a quality committment they make to themselves and to you. The entire company catalog is on-line although numbers and specific detail is hard to read.

Summer Classics is a manufacturer of fine garden furnishings and fireside accessories which was founded on the principle that truly classic design, no matter how simple or elaborate, can and will be embraced for years. We aspire to create exquisite furnishings which will enhance any setting. Perhaps a garden that beckons you to take a leisurely stroll, or a veranda made just for a cozy bench and long talks. In The Fireside Collection, we turn our attention indoors, to the hearth. Nothing holds quite the same attraction in any room, in any home. To complement, and even heighten this natural charm, we created The Fireside Collection. Standing by our same commitment to excellence and distinction as with our furniture, Summer Classics crafts its fire screens, tool sets and accessories inspired by designs originally incorporated into European castles and the fencing surrounding them. For years our commitment to creating unique and exceptionally high quality products, delivered on time and with the most careful attention to the needs and expectations of our customers, has made Summer Classics a leader in manufacturing of fine estate furnishings. We hope that you will find as much pleasure in the use of our products as we have found in creating them." (From the Summer Classics Web Site)

Swaim is many companies under one roof. For decades they have been held awe as a true designers line. Decorators and high-end furniture stores knew about the exquisite transitional and contemporary upholstery and occasional pieces they could get from Swaim. They could create unique and stunning room settings for movie stars and socialites that fit with their life-styles and budgets. Fortunately for the rest of us, the word eventually leaked out that you too could get the same look and styles from the people who make it. Swaim. If any one word summed them up it would have to be "elegance." Expect to pay more, but you can also expect to get more. More design, more quality. Choose from a wide selection of chairs, sofas, sectionals, ottomans in hundreds of fabrics. The occasional collection features plenty of brass and metal tables, along with eclectic glass, wood, stone and leather tables.
