Mac Kenzie-Dow has a mission statement, which is fairly unusual in the furniture industry; and considering the escaping sound of furniture manufacturing in the United States, their mission is quite welcome in this business. "To promote, market and sell products manufactured from the Appalachian Hardwood Forests and elsewhere to the Furniture Industry of America." Along with a couple other principles of providing marketing and sales for companies in the Appalachians, this seems to be a defining idea for Mac Kenzie-Dow. That's a long introduction, but it is a good one to set the stage. People don't realize just how important it is to purchase furniture made in the U.S. You can argue about the economic benefits and the mom and apple pie part, and that is certainly all true, although if an industry won't compete then it shouldn't compete. However, most of the furniture made in the U.S. is just better quality than what we're seeing being imported. I know there are exceptions, but for the same price, you can get really good quality here. Take Mac Kenzie-Dow for example. Their three collections, English Pub, County Down and the Oakwood collection feature hardwoods coming primarily, from the Appalachians. The styling is innovative and exciting and the quality of fit and finish are wonderful at their price range. I recommend you check them out on their web site and see what all the excitement is about.

Magnussen Home designs and crafts furniture for the most important rooms in your home. Your living room, dining room, master bedroom, guest room, den, study, media room, library. Wonderful places for occasional tables, decorative accents, entertainment walls, dining room and bedroom suites. Although Magnussen Home over the years has grown larger, the principles of a family-run-business -- trust, honesty and respect -- continue as their foundation. Ingwer Magnussen was a cabinetmaker by trade and a craftsman and businessman by heart. Ingwer took the bold initiative to start his own business in Kitchener, Ontario, when he was unable to find work during the 1930s depression. He beautifully and intricately carved show wood for sofa frames for upholstery manufacturers and his business grew into a good-sized company serving Canada. Today Magnussen has transformed into a full line furniture manufacturer with a strong presence in North America with an emerging business presence around the world. Magnussen Home has a passion for detail. Magnussen designers create every piece of furniture that carries the Magnussen Home name. We understand that finishing touches like intricately carved woodwork or ironwork do more than complete the look of a piece of furniture; they set the tone of your home.

When Mario Russo started the Mario Manufacturing Company in 1922, even he could not have possibly foreseen the growth and direction that his small New York based operation would take in the decades to come. Arriving in the United States from Palermo, Italy, Mario worked for a time making ornamental pictures frames. He later became associated with the Crucet Manufacturing Company in making decorative baskets, shades of mica, and a line of decorative floor lamps and torchiers. In 1922, he founded the Mario Manufacturing Company. In addition to producing beautifully hand decorated mica shades, the company became well known for its leather lamps. Mario, located on 26th street in New York, continued to grow and in the 1950's became one of the first companies to import hand crafted lamp bases from Italy. In 1952, upon the death of his father, Vito Russo became President of Mario Manufacturing. Mario Manufacturing expanded and relocated its production facilities to Mount Vernon, New York in the early 1960's. In 1965, Mario innovated the still popular mini lamp. These mini lamps created the transition for lighting to become decorative as well as functional. In 1988, Mario Russo's grandson, Louis Scutellaro, became President and relocated the business to Roanoke, Virginia. Since it's relocation, Mario has become a self contained manufacturer, producing all of its own components. Facilities include Ceramic Production., Woodworking, Permastone, and a comprehensive Lampshade program. Throughout the years, Mario has always manufactured hand crafted leather lamps as the company's signature. In 1997, Mario Industries re-introduced lampshades of genuine mica, reminiscent of the original Mario Designs. Today, Mario, the oldest family owned lamp manufacturer in the country, has grown to include these affiliated companies: Impressions (statues), Lampshades by Mario, Passport Furniture, Masterworks, and Finial Showcase. While serving a loyal International customer base nearly 5000 strong, Mario prides itself on its ability to equally serve both large and small customers, producing lamps of lasting beauty.

Compare them "apples to apples" with people using the same frames (make sure they are oak hardwood), the same fabrics, the same cushions, the same tailoring (make sure it is matched front and back), and be sure they feel just as comfortable (Massoud uses HRLux cushions just like all the high-end manufacturers.) You won't be able to compare the spring system because Massoud uses a next-generation spring system that looks more like your mattress than a sofa. Now, after you are certain you have two fairly similar sofas, look at the price tag. You will have the store deliver the Massoud. With 800 fabrics and 100 frames to choose from you certainly won't have any trouble finding a style and look that will fit in your home. And with a 10 year warranty covering everything under the fabric you certainly won't have to worry about it.

It's really tough being a start-up company these days. And to start a new furniture company in an already crowded field, middle to high-end upholstery, the challenge is especially daunting. So you have to hand it to anyone willing to try. That's what I've got to do for Jack McNeilly and Mike Champion, two enterprising young guys with 50 years experience in the industry. Focusing on the fabric and leather upholstery market they're working hard to produce a "better mousetrap" and compete by providing great styles and quality at a price that will make them very attractive to both dealers and consumers. In my experience, start up companies like this often provide an exceptional value because they are trying so hard to please and make a name for themselves. Interested dealers can find them at the High Point Market, consumers can call the factory for the name of the closest dealer. Good luck guys!

Wonderful collection of upper medium upholstery. They love to make traditional upholstery and it shows in the care and attention to detail you will find throughout this line. Choose from the standard selection of sofas, loveseats and sleepers as well as specialty chairs, designer chairs and sectionals. Frames, springs, and spring-down cushions are warranted for the life of the furniture, however, they are very careful to note that the warranty is voided if misuse or abuse is detected. That is a very strong warranty from a company in this price range. They can do it though because of the seasoned, kiln-dried hardwood frames, double-doweled joints reinforced with glued and screwed corner blocks; individually eight-way hand-tied double cone coils in the seats resting on resin-coated steel webbing; and individually pocketed spings in the spring-down cushions. Interiors are fully padded and the arms and backs are double covered and padded.

The Mitchell Gold Company has a simple vision -- create furniture that makes people feel good. Since its founding in 1989, the company has delivered on this singular vision with a full line of upholstered and slipcovered furniture that have become synonomous with today's relaxed styles of living.

"Since 1989, the Mitchell Gold Company has been committed to providing innovative moderately priced upholstery for relaxed styles of living. Instant Gratification is what we want to provide. We have based our company on selling only to retailers who will stock our products and provide them to our customers quickly.

We also look at things another way. Listen to what people want, then create it. We work extremely hard at this, the goal being serendipity at the furniture stores. It's all part of being responsive to what our customers want: basic yet classic furniture with timeless appeal. We call our style current, not traditional or contemporary, but perhaps a new blend of the two. (We avoid trendy; experience shows it ususally makes for regrettable furniture investments.)"

Mobel has always been one of my favorite companies. The very first piece of furniture I ever sold was to a friend (of course) and it was a Mobel bedroom set - Cherry Towne. That was in... well, a long time ago. He still has the set and still loves it. Mobel is made in Ferdinand, Indiana and is one of the few companies still making solid wood furniture. As of Spring of 2003 these are their major collections.
Abbington Manor- Country English Tudor design made from alder wood. With a warm medium brown finish. Very attractive look at a VERY attractive price.
American Images - Traditional American design with a rich cherry finish.
Cherry Towne - 18th century cherry finish on alder. This group has been around since 1976.
Oak Breeze - Lifestyle adaptation for the casual home decor. Shutter, Tradewind and Plantation bed designs give a hint at the feeling you'll get with this subtle collection.
Oak Towne - Number one seller in solid oak. Traditional 18th century American design.
Symetri - Mission/Shaker adaptation featuring simple, clean lines in two finishes.
Symetri Youth - Same collection, same solid wood construction and quality but scaled for youth. A tremendous value in solid wood furniture.

Adult and youth bedroom, dining room, occasional, bookcases, desks, rockers and a deacon's bench. Everything is constructed from Hard Rock Maple and other choice hardwoods harvested in Maine.
Moosehead Manufacturing, located in Monson, Maine, was founded in 1947 by brothers John and Tolford Durham. Tolford, an independent woodsman out of Belfast, Maine, saw the plant on one of his journeys to the north and noticed that it was for sale. Seeing the opportunity that the structure offered, he went back to his brother, John, then an executive at the Diamond Match Company, and the two decided to purchase the vacant mill.
Employing about forty people, they began making chair and table sets and, eventually, moved into the case goods market. After securing a good base for their business, they began developing, producing and marketing their own lines. The company has been growing ever since. In 1961, the company physically grew as it expanded to a second plant located in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Moosehead has produced more than a half billion dollars worth of furniture, at retail, in the last 50 years, and has been shipped thoughout the United States and to locations in Canada, Bermuda, Panama, Puerto Rico, Japan, and South Korea
A recent line called Memory Lane specializes in infant, youth, and young adult furniture, but has a secondary purpose of building a strong customer base for the adults of the future. Currently, the company is working on a new ash line to add to its traditionally maple furniture selection. The company hopes that the new lines it introduces help to broaden its customer base even more and that the longevity and quality of its product will bring back second, third, and fourth generations of Moosehead customers.

Mountain Lake Furniture sounds so.... so.... rural. So out in the country, or mountains or something. In fact, that's why Mountain Lake Furniture is so far away from the mainstream furniture industry. They want to make furniture in a setting that keeps them focused on the task at hand - making beautiful wood furniture and accent pieces consistent with the work ethic and values of the community. From the Mystic Valley Traders web site:

"Mystic Valley Traders began with a chance encounter between friends in 1984. Founder Nancy Mills was captivated by the woven woolens a neighbor purchased during a trip to Wales. Welsh looms produce distinctive patterns preserved through generations of family tradition. This inspired Nancy to explore the US market for traditional Welsh coverlets and throws. Nancy Mills

Nancy’s weavers developed appealing patterns and colors for the US market, fashioning coverlets into decorative pillows and table skirts. Other fabrics became pillow backs and bed skirts. As the new business grew, Nancy adapted Mystic’s designs to serve evolving customer preferences and appropriately, Mystic expanded its product line. Mystic would now offer duvet covers, shams, and pillows to complement the Welsh woven coverlets, completing the bedding ensembles.

In 1990 Mystic introduced its collections at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, NC for the first time. Mystic was the first “accessory” manufacturer to exhibit in the "furniture" arena. Pioneering synergies with bedroom furniture companies built Mystic’s reputation as an outstanding partner to fine furniture retailers, catalog houses, and Interior Decorators. Mystic offered high-quality bed linens at great value for immediate delivery. old logo Mystic was acquired by the Tager brothers in 2003. Under their creative direction, new collections and expanded product offerings drove Mystic’s business to new heights over the subsequent decade. All of the current products are the result of Tager collaboration and innovation. Today Mystic is an award-winning artisanal designer of high-end, top-of-bed linens made to order in the USA by American workers. Beautiful fabric ensembles that appeal to the finest tastes replace the original wovens. Mystic’s collections feature Mystic Valley Traders Icon rich colors, patterns, and textures in cotton prints, linens, silks, and blends, shipping within three weeks of a client order. Our workroom is a blaze of cutting, stitching and finishing, allowing clients to customize their orders, with the finest craftsmanship.

With 30 years of American creativity and service, Mystic is again in transition as the Kainer family has purchased this iconic company.

As ever, Mystic Valley Traders is The Company To Watch as the beddings world looks for the next great ideas. Keep your eyes on Mystic for innovative new collections, sales tools, customer outreach, and luxury bedding product support. Better yet, find us on Facebook at or join our mailing list by emailing us at We’d be delighted to inform you of our most recent developments as we extend the Mystic reputation for excellence in design, quality and customer service, and illustrate How To Make A Bed."
